Can a vegetarian still be considered a vegetarian and wear ballet slippers? I've been a vegetarian for more than a year and I just realized (dumb, I know) that my ballet slippers (their not pointe shoes) are made with leather. Can I still be considered a vegetarian if I keep wearing them? I'm quite serious about being a ballerina and a vegetarian. So there's my dilema. Thanks. EDIT: I think I wrote the question wrong. I meant to ask what you would do, your opinions. Sorry. Also, canvas shoes wouldn't work because I do competitions and ballet exams, so canvas shoes would be unnacceptable.
How often do children raised in a vegetarian home become meat-eaters? My mom raised my brothers and I vegetarian (almost totally vegan) because of her beliefs regarding the killing of animals. However, neither my brothers nor I remained vegetarian. One of my daughter's friends (age 10) is being raised vegetarian and my daughter wonders if she will eat meat someday. When I asked her what she thought, she told me that since everyone she knew who was raised vegetarian did not stay that way, that her friend won't either. I explained that everyone makes different decisions and her friend may be a vegetarian for life. So now I'm curious if there has been a study of vegetarian families, and how often children of vegetarians choose to eat meat as adults. Were my brothers and I the rule, or the exception? Reply to J.R. I started eating meat because I smelled it and it seems much more appetizing than the diet I grew up on. I still appreciate fresh vegetables (my dad is into gardening, I rarely tasted vegetables that weren't ultra-fresh) but I simply prefer the flavor of meats when given the choice.

For Vegetarians: What makes you want to be a vegan or vegetarian, what do you do for nutrients? I'm not judging, but I'm not a vegetarian. I do love animals, but I think its natural to eat meat (animals do too, after all) I just want to know other reasons, and the effects it has on your bodies, what kind of supplements do you use, and how do your decisions effect your life? (is it hard to go out to eat with friends or family, etc.) what other stands do you take for animal rights and the enviornment, and why? What drives your passion?

When your a vegetarian how much weight do you loose? I'm a vegetarian but very skinny, and need to gain weight so I eat a lot of starches and stuff. I want my friend to be a vegetarian a lot (she loves animals) but she won't because she thinks being a vegetarian will make you gain weight. Where to bring a vegetarian friend to eat in Kuala Lumpur? It's Chinese New Year here, and my Swedish friend wants to come and experience Malaysia. Does anyone know where are the good places around KL to bring a vegetarian with a good variety of things she can eat? She is not a strict vegetarian and can eat eat, onions and garlic I guess, just not meat. Any names and address' to the restaurants or coffee shops known for Vegetarian food would be very much appreciated! Thank you!
Why do some people call themselves vegetarian and eat meat? It's not a huge problem for me, but I just wonder sometimes. I have been basically lacto-vegetarian since 1984, I try to avoid eggs. No beef, pork, chicken, fish, shrimp, oysters, meat broth, meat fat, etc., or at least not willingly. I don't always know what's in the food in some situations, but I try my best to be polite and not be too much of a pain around non-vegetarians. I have heard people say they vegetarians, but some of them eat fish, chicken and even red meat. Why? Do they think it sounds good to say they are vegetarians or don't they know what the word means? Or, maybe it's like some people who say "I'm not racist" and then make some obviously racist remark. Any thoughts? To Siany: Yes I agree, the "I'm not racist" comment doesn't fit and I shouldn't have put it--I don't take that much time editing on Yahoo Answers so I missed it. "Pesco-pollo-vegetarian", I have trouble saying that without spitting on myself. It seems like someone could just say "I don't like red meat" if they are asked. I don't see why they need a name for "what they are." Eggs are kind of ambiguous unless they are fertile, but I don't see how anyone can classify chickens and fish as anything but animals. I wonder if maybe it started with the Catholic Church declaring fish as not meat.
What cookbooks are good beginners guides for Vegetarians inexperienced in preparing vegetarian meals? My cooking skills are very limited, most of which are for non-vegetarian meals. What cookbooks are good beginners guides for vegetarians inexperienced in making vegetarian meals?
What are some good vegetarian dishes that meat-eaters would love? Hi! I'm getting married in November and the place that we have chosen to have our ceremony and reception specifies that they have to provide the food. They have a strictly Vegetarian selection and will serve no meat. However, they are willing to fix any vegetarian selections that I would like. I would be fine with this as I love vegetarian dishes. However, none of the attendees will be vegetarians and there will be a few people who are die-hard meat and potato lovers (specifically, my husband-to-be). I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a couple of vegetarian dishes that even those die-hard people would love. Something so darn yummy it will make them forget they are eating vegetarian :) Any suggestions? To answer the question that many have asked. I chose this place because it was inexpensive (a summer tourist location during the winter means they are looking for people to come), it was a beautiful ceremony location, it comes with a wedding planner, it's out of the ordinary, and I could get a package deal. Frankly, I'm happy with the food and so will most of my guests. It's just my grumpy-gus groom who is grumbling :) And thank you thank you thank you... there are so many great ideas, I will definitely talk to the chef there to give them some ideas of what I'm looking for. I may even try some of these myself before the wedding to show my hubby-to-be that it's going to be okay.
how do I become a vegetarian? and what is the difference between vegan and vegetarian? I have had a very difficult year and have a need to make some minor changes. I have been getting back to my spiritual roots by meditating, having started yoga, and getting back on an enlightened path. As part of this, I am contemplating turning vegatarian. Everyone I know who is vegetarian is so healthy, and I have a need to do the same. Can someone give me good tips, sites and tell me the difference between vegen and vegetarian? I am also a single mother who is a fulltime student, therefore on a serious budget, so budgeting hints for this endeavor would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! I also have some real meat eaters in my family. How do you let them know without starting a fight?
What should a vegetarian order at a Chinese restaurant? I'm a vegetarian and I'm going to a Chinese restaurant tonight with some friends. It seems like most Chinese dishes have some sort of meat in them. Can any other vegetarians recommend something to eat at a Chinese restaurant?
How do you know what cheeses are vegetarian? I'm trying to become a vegetarian. I know there is something in some cheeses that makes them non-vegetarian. I know that rennet is bad. If it says "enzymes" is that also bad? Where do enzymes come from? Do most restaurants use non-vegetarian cheese? For example, a cheese and broccoli baked potato from Arby's - would a vegetarian eat that?
Where can I find vegetarian cooking classes in Dallas? It is one of my New Year's resolutions to become a vegetarian by the end of this year. Does every Benihana restaurant have a vegetarian meal option? I am attending a family dinner at a Benihana restaurant after Christmas. As a vegetarian, I am looking through their menu to see what sort of vegetarian options they have. Google results say that they have some sort of "secret" entree that is veggie-friendly, but I obviously don't see it on their online menu. Apparently, it is called "Vegetarian Saishoku" but if anyone can clarify that this is true? Just wondering if I should eat beforehand!
What are some decent vegetarian meals you can microwave? My sister is going away to school this fall and I'd like to make her a cookbook of some simple, but good vegetarian meals she can make in her dorm room. Problem is I'm not a vegetarian so I'm not much help...I appreciate any suggestions!
What vegetarian foods can give me all the vitamins and minerals of fish? When I told my doctor I'm a vegetarian, he said it's fine, but that should eat fish once a week just to get some extra minerals and vitamins. He said especially since heart disease and osteoporosis run in my family, I should eat fish for the phosphorus and the omega fatty acids. I know I'm being difficult, but I don't want to give up my ethics. How can I replace fish? Thanks!
When you become a vegetarian, do you automatically lose weight? A couple of my friends are vegetarians and they both lose a ton of weight immediately, so I was just wondering because I also know two adults who have gained weight becoming a vegetarian. I know that vegetarians can still eat carbs, cake, brownies, ice cream, and all sorts of junk food.
Is there room for hundreds of vegetarian and explicitly vegan organizations in every large city in No America? Recent history has shown that, when one group tries to supplant or supplement another, either group declines and fails, or both groups fail. Perhaps we've reached a new day in the consciousness and presence of vegetarians, and certainly NO group or set of organizers/administrators/values can appeal to all persons practicing vegetarian diets any more than PETA does or could speak for all pro-animal vegetarians.
What is a good vegetarian diet plan that would work well and fast? I'm 14 years old around 5'5 and about 120 pounds. I'm also a vegetarian. I'm looking to loose some weight but not a lot. Just to tone and to eat healthier. I can't seem to find a vegetarian diet plan so if you could help me out with some tips or information that would be great.
Ive decided to become vegetarian, but i want the ideal "buff" body look, what vegetables will help build body? Im young, and i started this 48 day vegetarian thing (for religious reasons) and i've decided to stay vegetarian forever. Limiting my animal products to milk, what vegetables can help me gain body mass. I want to be able to gain weight, and work out untill it becomes toned muscles. I goto a gym, and a dude thats HUGE told me that he's a strict carnivore, all he eats is meat, and thats his secret for his giant muscles. What vegetables give protein, and make you fatter/larger? Please help!
Can a vegetarian eat chicken flavored top ramen? Does it have any actual chicken in or anything? It's really the only thing I miss from my pre-vegetarian days, but I don't want to eat it if a chicken was killed in the process. To the person who thinks that a true vegetarian should know what they should eat- I know exactly what I do and do not want to eat. I don't want to eat anything with meat. I may not be able to tell conclusively whether or not the product mentioned meets those standards, and therefore, ask for help in gathering information.
How do I know what foods are vegetarian at restaurants? I eat out a lot, but now I'm switching to vegetarian. How hard is it to eat out being a vegetarian? I'm worried about hidden animal ingredients. I especially love Chinese. If I get tofu and veggies, can I be fairly certain that is vegetarian?

Will becoming a vegetarian actually help the animals? I've been thinking of becoming a vegetarian. I know a lot of people are vegetarians, but will me becoming one actually help the animals? And what other ways will it help besides the animals? Thanks!
Why are eggs considered part of a vegetarian diet? I wonder why they are seen in vegetarian recipe books, because they are part of the meat group in the food pyramid. They come from chickens and could potentially grow into chickens, so why it is considered okay (in mainstream society) to eat them if you're a vegetarian? If I was a vegetarian, I would just strictly eat fruits, grains, and vegetables. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it.
Where can I find reliable information about becoming a vegetarian? Lately I have found redmeat and sometimes poultry disgusting. Not in the way it's cooked but more like i'm losing a taste for it. I'm seriously thinking about becoming a vegetarian. I know about the lack of protein that some vegetarians have, but what are some other downfalls to being a vegetarian? What are some good things? Most importantly where can i find reliable information on becoming a vegetarian?
As a vegetarian, how do I stomach cooking meat for my husband? I am strongly leaning towards becoming a full-time vegetarian, eating only vegetables and natural foods (no cheese or eggs and no soy/tofu or "meat substitute" products either). My husband is a meat eater. How do I cook for both of us? Sometimes cooking meat absolutely turns my stomach, but he has to have it with each meal or he doesn't get full.
How hard is it to transition to becoming a vegetarian? What are some filling vegetarian meals? I'm absolutely love eating meat. Plus, I'm very active and need to eat filling meals. However, I've been reading a lot about how eating meat is bad for world food supplies and the environment. For example, it takes 6 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of meat. Basically I'm interested in becoming a vegetarian or at least cutting back on my meat intake. I'm asking this to vegetarians who have big apetites and used to be carnevours: How difficult is the transition? Also, what are some good vegetarian meals?
What cookbooks are good begginers guides for Vegetarians inexperienced in preparing vegetarian meals? My cooking skills are fairly limited, most of which are for non-vegetarian meals. What cookbooks are good for beginner vegetarians?
What are some vegetarian alternatives to fish oil supplements? I am a dancer and would normally take a fish oil supplement or just eat fish for my joints and all that. But now that I'm vegetarian, I'm looking for animal-friendly options to get the same benefits for dancing. Suggestions? Anyone found something that really works?
Why did you become a vegetarian or vegan? What are your reasons for being a vegan or vegetarian? To not cause harm to animals? To become healthier? To live longer? List your reasons, and whether you are vegan or vegetarian.
How do you maintain a vegetarian diet when your husband and kids are die hard meat eaters? My husband and my son both think the world is going to come to an end if we don't have meat daily. I just eliminated poultry out my diet, and I have been pork and red meat free for a few months now. I do plan on eating fish occassionally (I love fish anyway) but certainly not every day. Are there any vegetarian meals you can suggest? Or, does anyone know of a good vegetarian/pescatarian cookbook you can recommend?
How do you become a Vegetarian with out any support? Yeah, I’ve decided I want to go vegetarian or at least try it out for a while. I think it would be a pretty easy transition from one to the other. I want to do it for health reasons; I’d still eat meat if it was served to me at a guest at someone’s house. The problem is, I still live with my family for the time being. They are very NOT interested in even trying that. It would be too complicated to cook two different meals in the same kitchen at the same time. Plus, there would be more (or at least different) groceries to buy. If I wasn’t with my family I’m pretty sure I could do it no problem, but what can I do in the situation I’m in? Surely some of you Vegetarians have come across a dilemma like this. I need some advice!
How do you become a vegetarian? What different types of vegetarians are there? I am wanting to be on a diet because I am extremely overweight. I am 5'3 and weigh about 213 lbs. My problem is that I LOVE food and I was raised in an environment that when it came to dinnertime, you either ate what you had on the table or you went hungry, and that was including cleaning everything on your plate. My family were farmers and had very little as it was so we ate whatever we had in our house. Well, as far as I can remember, I have always done that. I've tried a few diets, with success but then gained weight back plus more. I've have been thinking lately about becoming a vegetarian. I have been thinking of this because my sister-in-law and mother-in-law are vegetarians and seem to be extremely healthy, along with being in their weight ranges for their ages. I'm needing to know where and how I should start looking into becoming a vegetarian and how many different types of vegetarians there are. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Why are their so many Vegetarian apologists? Whenever another vegetarian or Vegan says anything the lest bit controversial such as meat eating is immoral, how can you stand to eat meat, or god forbid, I support the ALF, Some Vegetarian apologist is ready and waiting to right that person off for stating their beliefs. Are some of you that insecure in the direction of our movement, if you can even call it a movement, that you feel the need to cater to the sensibilities of the masses and not offend anyone? I mean no one any disrespect, meat eater or vegetarian, but to discuss this issue means that some meat eaters and vegetarians might get their feathers ruffled a bit. Disagreements in ideology or tactics are fine, hell even desired. However, to have some Vegetarian apologist undermining others is frankly really annoying. Thoughts? I think some of you are missing the point. I'm not talking about how militant someone is about the cause and whether you agree or disagree with that. You’re welcomed to hold and state whatever your feelings are on that subject. What I'm talking about is the people who marginalize others in their same group for having views that are more radical, or less, than their own. People who try and create the illision that the entire Vegetarian and Vegan movement is against this persons ideas instead if disagreeing with it yourself. That’s what I'm talking about. @ greenghost: I have no idea what provoked that rant of yours. I'll say two things and you can take them how you wish: 1. I'm not sure were you get your ideas about what the Animal Rights movement is about, but whether you like it or not, animal rights is a part of it. not just promoting a diet that causes less suffering. 2. No social justice movement in history has ever succeeded without a radical element. Ever. I intentionally try to stir up the pot about the ALF and groups like them because I believe Americans and most of the western world are afraid to be labeled as extreme, or support ideas viewed by many to be extreme. This is dangerous. The voice of moderation is important, but moderation is not a voice people hear. Moderation does not get things done, it keeps a balance. An important job to be sure, but it does not do the real work. It does not get people to open their eyes. @ GreenGhost: "Matt, my 'rant' is because you have a history here of claiming that those groups are pro-vegetarian and help spread the word about the benefits of vegetarianism! "   -First of all who are "these groups?" I only mentioned one, the ALF, and I was not specifically talking about their contribution or lack thereof to the movement. I only mentioned them as a group that people feel the need to make excuses for wheather they support them or not.   "They do nothing of the sort and *hurt* the reputation of real organizations that understand that a positive message and positive actions are the way to sway general public opinion to our side!"   - Which organizations are we talking about here?    "Alf is a terror group plain and simple!"   - That's your opinion, and your entitled to it. I don't desire to go off track and talk about the inaccuracies of labeling the ALF a terrorist group in this question.   "At a bare minimum they have killed one person,"   - No they haven't. Your grouping organizations that have no ties to each other. The federal government does not even claim the ALF has killed anyone.    "...injured several others and killed hundreds of animals through their campaign of arson..."   - While I don't particularly agree with the tactic of arson in every case, every possible precaution is taken to make sure no animals are harmed when a building is burned down. Obviously this is imposable as spiders or mice, rats, or other creatures living in the building that were not captives could very well be injured. This is a problem, I agree.    ..bombings and targeted assassination!"   - The "bombing was a lit Molotov cocktail sat on someone's back porch, without being thrown at someone or something, this is about a dangerous as a lit tiki torch. Hardly a bombing. Again, they have never killed anyone, there has been no assignation.   "Thanks to alf's record being blamed as veggie extremism you will find that it's extremely difficult for scientists that happen to be veggie to be allowed anywhere near a lab."   - What would any self respecting Vegetarian or Vegan scientist be doing in a lab experimenting on animals anyways?   "Vegginess is now considered a security risk! Media doesn't just say alf blew up a research lab, they say things like "Vegetarian animal rights protesters bombed a facility that was working on a cure for the terrible human scourge of Lupus"."   - The media distorts many things, We should work with them to any extent possible to make sure actions are reported properly. Indeed the ALF use to do this, but has quit for some reason. It needs to be a priority again.   "I (and other veggies in the region) caught a lot of flak when peta refused to help feed snowbound cattle in Colorado! Veggies in this region caught a LOT of flak over that since *most* Americans automatically think peta (who won't support no-kill animal shelters) represents the mind set of ANYONE that supports veggies or animal welfare!"   - I'm no PETA supporter, However why should PETA waste their money to help feed cattle that will end up slaughtered anyways and help line the farmers pockets? I'm glad they did not help them. The farmers need to take responsibility for their own inaction. They knew the storm was coming. Those animals were going to die anyways, whether PETA helped or not.     "You claim that no social justice movement ever succeeded with a violent fringe element (yeah, I did twist your words). Was it Bobby Seale or M.L.King along with Rosa Parks that won civil rights?"   - Did the Black Panthers, and Malcolm X play no important role?      "Did the Underground Railroad save slaves lives; or burn plantations down and kill the slaves?"   - Actually their were groups that burned down plantations after slaves were freed. Keep in mind that what the Underground Railroad did was illegal and unpopular. The media condemned those actions then as they condemn the actions of animal liberators now.   "We all know M.K. Gandhi won freedom for India by blowing up British barracks and slaughtering all Indians that supported the Brit's, right? Get my drift yet!"   - Wrong, talk to many Indians and they will tell you Gandhi got many innocent people killed unnecessarily. He is not quite as popular in his homeland as he is here. "Right here in the Food>V&V section haven't you seen folks slamming ALL vegetarians because of the stupid actions of alf and peta members? "   - They slam us because of their lack of understanding of the issues their own insecurities or the media's twisting of stories.   "Moderation is EXACTLY what gets things changed!"   - I would say not, and I don't think anyone who has studied history seriously would disagree.   "I've been veggie longer than you've been on this planet (if I recall correctly you're mid-20s)."   - Unfortunately that is no indication of comprehension of the topics, and is blatantly ageist.    "Myself and others like me that were 'quietly' veggie are what caused the surge of veggies in the '70s. As folks became veggie they automatically began to care more about the condition of animals. It's just a normal by-product of a 'gentler' form of life! Patience is a virtue and we all need that as we break cycles that have been ingrained in human conciousness for thousands of years."   - So what do you suggest that we wait another thousand years until people wake up? The sixties and seventies are over, we don't have time for all that hippie stuff now. Animals are dieing. It's too late to let people come to vegetarianism on their own terms. We need to bring it to them.    "Your too young to remeber the days when it was considered 'normal and no big deal' to drown excess dogs and cats as one small example of how conditions have improved. How about bull and **** fights? No big deal when I was young but now the vast majority of people are disgusted with the situation!"   - That's wonderful but now instead of drowning, dogs and cats are euthanized or sold to class B dealers who sell the animals into medical research. That's hardly a victory for the animals.    "Aren't you in Chicago where they're banning Fois gras?"   - I am.   "Even though ineffective (and misguided) look at all the folks who shun factory animals and seek free-range "foods". As they are slowly made to realize the truth of 'free-range' it'll be veggies like me that will be there to switch them to analogs (fake meats) and away from animals; not peta and/or alf!"   - I sure hope so. Although I fear that the blinders of the free range label may take quite a bit of work to remove for many people.     "Finally(almost), you didn't like me getting in your face did you<evil grin>?? See how it works? You immediatly shut out what I said, didn't you?"   -Absolutely not. I took in what you said, however I disagree with it. I like a good debate. No hard feelings here, this is what it's all about.    "That's how people react to peta and alf!"   - That's because PETA's acts are mainly adventurism and ineffective, and the ALF gets nothing but bad press as of recently.   "That's why if you *really* want to help veggies (and the natural flow to improved conditions for animals) you shoud be supporting the groups that that quietly put the whisper in the doctors ear that vegginess is healthy, that run no-kill shelters, that send letters of concern to regulators." - Welfarism is not my goal, Abolition is. Wile I would never argue that a longer chain and fewer beatings for a slave would be better then doing nothing to improve his or her condition, I would hardly be content to stop there. I feel the same for animals, they are not ours to use and exploit.   "Lastly; you might find it interesting to know that I was a 'charter' member of peta and left somewhere in the mid/late '80s. I left them after they decided that irritating people was a good way to get massive press coverage; without paying attention to what bad press did to the cause!"   - As you might find it interesting to know that I really don't like PETA or their methods all that much. The fact that they hire celebritys to appear in their ads and then turn around and kill animals they have rescued due to lack of funds is reason enough to not support them for me. (Whew, thats long! Happy reading!) Hi GreenGhost, I have posted my reponce on a diffrent yahoo site becuase this was getting hard to read, the full text of the debate, including my last responce can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/veggiefacts/message/44 PM me to respond,or you can just post it here if you would like.
Does a vegetarian diet make someone more edgy and irritable? I say vegetarian only because vegan is a myth. It seems like vegetarians are snippy, at least here. Are they getting too little or too much of something to cause this? Ex. Adding too much salt for flavor or too much salt in store bought prepared vegetarian foods causing high blood pressure which results in irritability. blackbyrus---I agree. With written words, the READER supplies the inflection more than the writer. sherry----vegan is a myth. You cannot ride in or on any vehicles nor eat any commercially grown produce and be a true vegan. Rendered animals are used in the production of those things and that is non-vegan. The best anyone can do is grow their own veges and never use a vehicle. Not even a bicycle. "Trying to be a vegan" is as close as they can get but short of cutting out those products, calling themselves "vegan" is inaccurate.
What are some ready made vegetarian items i can buy from my local supermarket? I recently became a vegetarian (about a month ago) and I love it. I feel better, have more energy, and I feel like I am doing something good for animals. I love veggie burgers because they are quick and easy to make and also delicious. I buy them at my local supermarket, and I was just wondering if you guys could recommend some other things I can buy at a local supermarket that are meat free but are quick and easy to make like a veggie burger. Also, if you could recommend some drinks and snacks that are vegetarian and good for your body, especially if they contain protein.
Health wise; How would a vegetarian and non-vegetarian be compared? Here's an idea: If i was raising 2 children, both the same age, health, and genetics, and i raised one on a vegetarian diet, and one on a non-vegetarian diet; What would be the health outcome of the both? What do studies say? Do vegetarians live longer? Or, are non-vegetarians the healtheir ones? What is your personal opinion? Would you base your life style upon that opinion?
